What happens in the weight loss surgery abroad? ( combined with Billroth II gastrojejunostomy )

This is one of the fastest growing methods in the health, weight loss and medical communities. This type of weight loss surgery abroad is most suitable for people who are classified as ‘morbidly obese’. The vast majority of potential candidates for the surgery have already sought and tried many different ways to lose weight and have found they have had no success.

The bariatric surgery is a less invasive alternative to the standard operation, but produces similar results. The procedure is performed laparoscopically, which means the surgeon works through several small incisions . They use a tiny camera (called a laparoscope) and a television screen to guide special instruments through the incisions. The surgeon creates a narrow tube (as opposed to the pouch in a standard bypass surgery) and separates the remaining stomach with staples or stitches. The tube is connected directly to the jejunum (lower intestines), approximately six feet from the starting point.

This connection bypasses the upper portion of the small intestine (the duodenum) where the body absorbs most of the food’s nutrients. This means that when you eat a meal the food goes directly from the tube to the lower portion of the small intestines. You’ll only be able to eat much smaller portions of food. The second active part of the weight loss surgery is that the bypassed portion of the small intestine decreases caloric absorption. Most patients experience an average weight loss of about 140 pounds – with their initial weight being situated around 280 – 300 pounds.

Before, some patients developed ulcers. However the technique has been improved greatly since the 1970’s. The surgery has been combined with a Billroth ii gastrojejunostomy. This means that the smaller stomach is different in form and the problems rising acid and helps to prevent acid. This improved version is called the BII Gastric bypass. There are also anti-ulcer drugs which prevent this being a problem.

“A friend of mine who struggled greatly with her weight, as I did, told me about gastric banding. She had researched many surgeons in both UK and abroad. Soon she was booked up and away to Belgium for her op. Being someone who had many years of yo-yo dieting and joining weight loss clubs I watched her steadily losing her weight and being transformed before my eyes, I was now so jealous. I started questioning her about her experience and weighing up the pros and cons of going abroad for surgery. (I still can't find any cons)

Susan

Eight months later I was having a consultation with Chris in the Edinburgh clinic. He was very thorough in going over everything, how it all worked, what to expect, best place to stay etc. Three weeks later, on the 21st June 2007, I was off to Belgium for my own gastric band. I was a bit nervous being away from home but the worry was short lived. I was completely put at ease straight away at the hospital the next morning.

Some people worry about aftercare when going abroad for surgery. Well, the surgeon is in the UK every Thursday and gives patients phone numbers where he can be contacted at all times. Chris recommends a barium swallow x ray is done each year just to check everything is well with the band. This is not practice in the UK which is probably why Chris' patients tend not to have difficulties.

Katherine

The surgeon has the lowest complication rate for his banding and has done thousands of these operations while it is still a relatively new procedure in the UK. His vast experience and bedside manner are very reassuring to patients and I have already passed friends on to him who have also since been to Belgium for the band. In the past 3 years I have met many of Chris' UK patients and have made some wonderful friends. This surgery has changed my life and I am so grateful to Chris and his team for this. I have lost 6 stone and feel I’ve been handed my life back.”

Why a Mini Gastric Bypass?

Our Surgeon – Dr Chris De Bruyne

  • It’s reversible

This surgery is reversible, which is an extraordinary advancement compared to other weight loss surgeries, which require much more post-surgery attention. This make recovery much easier for people. The ability to reverse the operation is a great advantage for people who are not recovering well or responding well to the surgery of those that are pregnant. In these cases, the patient can get the surgery reversed and resort to alternative weight loss options.

  • A much shorter procedure

This surgery takes less time to perform. It can take only a quarter of the time that a more traditional procedure takes. It usually takes approximately 30 – 40 minutes to complete. The recovery hospital time is about 24 hours although our professional surgeon insists on a 3 day stay.

  • Weight loss procedure with fewer risks

Due to using a laparoscope in the procedure is less invasive and poses fewer risks of any complications arising. The surgeon doesn’t have to make large incisions in the abdomen which reduces the risk of having scars or developing a hernia.

  • Cost effective bariatric surgery abroad

This weight loss surgery is more cost effective as it’s a much quicker procedure and is less invasive than traditional surgical weight loss procedures. It also has the ability to start weight loss within a few days after surgery.

  • The weight loss surgery works

Perhaps the biggest benefit of this bariatric surgery is a proven method that leads to weight loss. It’s a result of decreasing hunger while increasing the feeling of being full. You do have to enter into a lifestyle change with a healthier diet and regular exercise. By doing this as well as the surgery abroad, you’ll achieve your desired results.
